Happy International Women's Day

March 8, 2018

Happy International Women’s Day! In honor of the day where we celebrate women, I would like to discuss my three favorite female writers.

1. Hiromu Arakawa

Hiromu Arakawa is a Japanese manga artist and writer. Born Hiromi Arakawa in Hokkaido on May 8th, 1973, she is best known for her international hit, Fullmetal Alchemist. Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in a world where alchemy is one of the world’s most advanced scientific techniques. The story follows two alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, in their search for the legendary philosopher’s stone that they need in order to restore their bodies after a disastrous attempt to bring their mother back to life using taboo alchemy. The manga has been adapted into two anime series. Hiromu is also known for her slice of life romantic comedy, Silver Spoon, and her manga adaptation of Yoshiki Tanaka’s The Heroic Legend of Arslan novel series, both of which have also been adapted into anime series.

2. Rumiko Takahashi

Rumiko Takahashi, born on October 10th 1957, is a Japanese manga artist and writer. With several worldwide hits, she is one of Japan’s most successful manga artist. Her notable works include Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma ½, Inuyasha, and most recently, Rin-ne. All have received anime adaptations and major success. My two favorite works of hers are Ranma ½ and Inuyasha. Ranma ½ is a martial arts, romantic comedy about a young martial artist whose gender changes every time he is splashed with water after accidently falling into a cursed spring. Inuyasha is a fantasy adventure story that follows a young schoolgirl from Tokyo named Kagome who is transported to the Sengoku period where she meets a half dog-demon named Inuyasha. When the magical Shikon Jewel embodied in Kagome is shattered and it’s many pieces are scattered across Japan, Kagome and Inuyasha set off a journey with their new allies to find all the pieces                                                                          before the powerful, evil demon, Naraku, finds them                                                                          first.

3. J. K. Rowling

J. K. Rowling is a British novelist, screenwriter and producer. Born Joanne Rowling on July 31st, 1965, she is best known for her award winning Harry Potter fantasy novel series. Harry Potter follows the life of a young wizard named Harry as he attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and struggles against the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort. The series is the best-selling book series in history and has been adapted into a highly successful film series. Rowling has lived a “rags to riches” life story and became the world's first billionaire author, though she lost her billionaire status by giving much of her fortune to charity. The Harry Potter series was big part of my life growing up and still                                                                                       influences me to this day.
